LFHS Foundation Helps Launch New Business Incubator Course:
Looking for Local Business Leaders to Act as Coaches and Mentors
Lake Forest, IL – Community members are invited to join representatives from the Lake Forest High School (LFHS) Foundation and Administration on Wednesday, June 11 at 7 p.m. in the Public Room at LFHS East Campus to learn more about a new Business Incubator course and how to become involved as a coach or mentor. The course, which was funded by a grant from the LFHS Foundation in cooperation with LFHS Administration, is designed to get students excited about becoming true entrepreneurs by giving them the opportunity to create and fully develop their own product or service. Although the class will be led by a teacher from the school’s Business Department, real-life entrepreneurs and business experts will serve as coaches and mentors to the students. The new course will launch in the fall.
“The Business Incubator course is designed to give students access to not only the excellent teaching staff at LFHS, but also successful entrepreneurs and other business experts,” says Liz Brandel, LFHS Foundation Chair. “We believe exciting things will come from connecting our high school with the many knowledgeable business leaders we have in our community.”
Teams will be guided through the Lean start-up process of ideation, market research and business model development. The yearlong course will culminate in a Shark Tank-style presentation giving students the opportunity to gain funding to take their business to market. “The Business Incubator has the potential to transform business education at LFHS and provide students with a truly unique learning opportunity,” says Joe Pulio, LFHS Business Education teacher.
“Creating a business incubator at LFHS is directly aligned with our school’s mission to inspire the passion to learn, the insight to know oneself, and the courage to make a difference,” says Barry Rodgers, LFHS Principal. “We want to create a dynamic, inspiring environment where technology, the facilities, and the community enhance the learning experience. The Business Incubator is a perfect example of this. The course also provides instruction that is real world inquiry-based, interdisciplinary and highly collaborative which is another one of our goals.”
